BVG, Bauer-Verfahrenstechnik-GmbH located in Greifenberg/Ammersee, Germany, was honored to supply the largest coating kitchen in the world to APP Hainan, China. This order “stands out” compared to all other orders in paper making. Just the production rate is stunning! It cumulates to 2.000 t/d (two thousand) and gives an impression about the dimensions of the project.

The huge amount of coating color required cannot be generated economically by conventional technology. For BVG it was clear from the beginning that new concepts had to be developped. Since beginning of the bidding (which lasted over one year) BVG proposed the continuously operating system, even though the customer only had experience with batch systems, and had asked for this technology, in the first place.

The potential of the continuous system was so convincing at the end, that there was no alternative and the customer agreed, finally. One of the reasons to go for the continuous concept was the outstanding savings on energy. Compared to the batch process, savings on energy on the Hainan project cumulates to 2,5 MW power installed, that means savings of about 2,5 million Euro per year.

Beside economiocal reasons, there were also other relevant advantages on the technical and technological side to put the continuous BVG coating kitchen technology into the lead. The paper machine will be delivered by Voith.

Groundbreaking at Hainan

It has a length of 1,350 ft and a trim width of 464”. Production speed will be 5,400 ft/min. The machine will produce WFC-Art paper online. There are 5  “coating-layers” on each side: first there is a Speed Sizer, with a starch application on each side; then there are two Speed-Coaters with base coat simultaneously applied on both sides; followed by 4 separate blade coaters for top coat.

The BVG supply summarizes to:

  • Seven service stations at the paper machine
  • All equipment for wet end chemistry
  • Continuous coating kitchen with 5 BVG-Super-C-Shears
  • Engineering for the complete mechanical and electrical BVG supply
  • The complete DCS hardware for the BVG supply, based on Siemens PCS-7
  • Programming
  • Installation supervision
  • Training
  • Commissioning

The time frame is very rigorous. There are only 12-months available from placing the order to start up of the mill-this is very challenging. This project gives BVG the chance to be established in the world market as the only German coating kitchen supplier and as a global player, which will be a trusted partner to the paper industry.

Beside Asia there is also a big market potential in America. Therefore, in 2006, BVG Inc. in Charleston, SC. USA was founded. This business is also developing successfully. Top ranked paper companies such as Georgia Pacific, MeadWestvaco, Fraser Paper and Wausau Paper are already BVG customers.
